When We Ruled: The Best of The Pursuit of Happiness features 21 tracks spanning the band’s career, including original
versions of their hit singles like “I’m an Adult Now,” “She’s So Young,” and “Hard to Laugh,” alongside rare and previously
unreleased material and two new recordings. This compilation draws from the band’s studio albums Love Junk (1988), One
Sided Story (1990), The Downward Road (1993), Where’s the Bone? (1995), and The Wonderful World of The Pursuit of
Happiness (1997), capturing their signature blend of alternative rock, power pop, and witty, introspective lyrics.
The track selection emphasized authentic versions of radio singles and fan favorites starting with the 1988 version of the
breakthrough hit “I’m an Adult Now” from Love Junk (Chrysalis Records) and progressing through subsequent releases up to
“She’s the Devil” from The Wonderful World of… (Mercury Records, 1996). Notable inclusions are fan favorites such as
“She’s So Young,” “Hard to Laugh,” “Cigarette Dangles” from The Downward Road (1993, Chrysalis), and “Kalendar” from
Where’s the Bone? (1995, Mercury). To honor the band’s indie origins, the album bookends these hits with the rare 1986
independent single version of “I’m an Adult Now” as the closer, bookending the sequence and symbolizing their grassroots
beginnings. Rarities like the previously unreleased B-side “Let My People Go” and outtake “Take You With Me” from the Love
Junk sessions were added sparingly to enhance completeness without overshadowing the singles. The two newly recorded
for the original compilation release “Hey Mary Anne,” an original composition written by Berg just months before recording
in September 2005, serves as a fresh bridge between the band’s past catalog and potential future output, while the cover of
Prince’s “When Doves Cry” pays homage to influences and demonstrates their continued vitality. While excluding most
deeper album cuts for a streamlined narrative; the final 21 tracks were arranged chronologically to evoke the band’s “ruling”
period in Canadian alt-rock.!
Thematically, the track ordering traces the Pursuit of Happiness’s progression from witty, youthful pop-rock anthems in the
late 1980s to more mature, introspective material in the 1990s. This arc highlights the band’s shift from humorous,
relationship-driven songs to explorations of personal growth and societal observation, culminating in the reflective close
with the original “I’m an Adult Now,” reinforcing their enduring legacy.
