Marianas Trench always upped their game with each successive album, but their upcoming sixth full-length release, Haven, is more epic and far-reaching, musically and thematically, than any previous record.
On Haven, Josh Ramsay takes on Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Hero’s Journey’ – a classic text that's been a mainstay for generations in describing the commonalities between virtually every quest narrative in existence.
The result is a narrative sequence of 13 tracks that find Ramsay stretching his range as a songwriter and vocalist and incorporating a huge number of diverse musical DNA strands – from deep orchestral textures to rock elements inspired by an incredibly wide spectrum of eras and genres.
Deeply layered and heavily orchestrated, as ambitious and cinematic as Haven is, it still leaves plenty of room for anyone who’s felt there was more to life to see their own journey reflected in. And, as with all Marianas Trench records, it depends as much on the band’s chops and substantial versatility as players and singers in their own right as it does on their shared ethic of pushing the envelope as hard as they can with each new release.
